My goal , as a teacher, is for students to develop the confidence and competence to formulate and articulate questions about which informed people disagree. I have come to think that the two best ways to achieve this goal are:
- To make the class itself a place of productive disagreement by bringing in sophisticated arguments and encouraging students to reject, reform, embrace, or entangle them,
- to set up challenging assignments and high standards while providing lots and lots of help.
